With two degrees in chemistry and research experience in semiconductor physics, Alec leverages his scientific background to draft and prosecute patents and counsel clients on IP strategies.

Alec’s prosecution experience includes securing patents for valuable technologies in the oil and gas, energy, chemical, telecommunications, banking and financial services, fintech, AI and machine learning, software, mechanical, life science, and biotechnology industries. As an IP counselor, Alec helps build IP portfolios of both startups and large companies. Alec’s experience also includes navigating patent eligibility challenges, particularly issues under 35 U.S.C. § 101, crafting applications that clearly demonstrate the practical applications of inventions.

His scientific background is anchored by his master’s degree in chemistry. During his graduate work, Alec conducted research on defect physics in semiconducting materials, using material chemistry to analyze materials using a variety of spectroscopic methods, and developing novel spectroscopic methods including photo thermal deflection and time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. Alec has also taught undergraduate courses in advanced physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and general chemistry.

In addition to his intellectual property practice, Alec is deeply committed to pro bono work. He actively participates in Kansas City’s juvenile detention docket, where he helps underserved children receive adequate representation, ensuring that they have a fair chance in the legal system.
