Emma King-Murphy focuses her practice on patent litigation and post-grant proceedings, including inter partes reviews (IPR) and ex parte reexaminations (EPR). She joined Erise IP after working as a summer associate for the firm.
Emma’s interest in litigation developed through hands-on experience in both trial and appellate settings. She interned with the Missouri State Public Defender’s Office, where she sat third chair in a jury trial and assisted with voir dire, trial strategy, and client management. She also externed for Judge Pfeiffer of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, and interned with the United States Attorney’s Office. Those experiences gave her an early appreciation for the strategy and advocacy involved at every stage of a case, and continue to inform her approach to patent disputes.
She was specifically drawn to patent litigation because there is always something new to learn. Every case brings a new technology to understand, along with legal issues that are constantly evolving. She also values the breadth of the practice and the opportunity to work across complex district court litigation, appellate matters, and administrative proceedings. For Emma, that combination of learning, problem-solving, and varied advocacy is what makes patent law compelling.
Emma graduated summa cum laude from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, where she was a member and comment writer for UMKC’s Law Review Journal and served as a teaching assistant in the school’s research and writing program for first-year students.
